A Shropshire finance expert is bringing a fresh perspective to the UK Material Handling Association (UKMHA) after becoming just the second female to be appointed to its board.
Rebecca Smith, Managing Director of Midac UK Ltd, brings with her a wealth of leadership experience and a unique perspective shaped by her background in finance.
Rebecca has carved out a career as a highly respected accounting and senior management leader, with an impressive reputation both regionally and industry-wide.
She currently heads Midac UK Ltd, which specialises in total battery solutions for the materials handling market, which is where her dealings with the UKMHA began. Her earlier career included a senior role with electrical speed drive manufacturer Nidec Industrial Automation, providing her with a unique mix of technical understanding and financial acumen.
She said: “My journey into UKMHA board membership wasn’t a conventional one, as I had little prior knowledge of the association two years ago. But as Managing Director of a company serving the materials handling sector, I discovered just how vital UKMHA’s role was – not only in representing the industry’s interests, but also in providing practical support on compliance and navigating ever-changing legislation.
“The compliance landscape can be daunting,” Rebecca explains. “Without the UKMHA’s guidance, we could easily have encountered difficulties ourselves.”
Rebecca quickly immersed herself in the organisation, attending events and learning from industry experts such as UKMHA Technical Director David Goss, who advises members on standards, safety, and legislation.
Her commitment and active involvement caught the attention of UKMHA’s Chief Executive Rob Fisher, who invited her to join the board.
Rob said: “Rebecca’s appointment represents an exciting new chapter for the UKMHA. She brings a sharp financial mind, a strong track record of business leadership, and a willingness to challenge us to think differently. Her skillset will help us continue to evolve and better serve our members.”
Rebecca added: “Sound financial management is a pillar of any successful organisation, providing the stability to support staff members and invest in future growth. I hope my perspective will help the association grow with confidence.”
Women in leadership is a cause close to Rebecca’s heart, and she hopes her appointment will inspire others to step forward. As a parent to two young children, managing the demands of running a multi-million-pound business with the everyday chaos of family life.
“One minute I’m making a decision worth millions, the next I’m at a roller disco with my kids – and the variety of life is something that sustains me,” she added.
“Time is a commodity as a result, which is why the UKMHA appeals so much to me. It adds value, reduces stress, and raises standards for everyone involved, so it goes without saying that I am delighted to join the board.”
